One of the best decisions I ever made. See my Yelp review (below with link) and vote for them as The Best CrossFit Gym in San Diego!
I turned the corner of an industrial brick building and stepped onto a wooden ramp leading me into a room full of weights pounding against the floor, metal bars clinking against racks, medicine balls soaring against the wall, and groans of exertion- masked by the pumping beats and trainers shouting words of encouragement, along with WOD, AMRAP, and EMOM.
As I stepped into what I would soon learn is called 'the box', every fiber of my yoga doing, barre loving, swimming and dancing trained body wanted to run. As a woman and as an athlete, I was completely new to the sport and the method of working out that is CrossFit-and I was completely intimated.
However, from the minute I stepped into the box at Power Keg Athletics, the coaching staff and other gym members alike welcomed me with open friendly arms. With each happy smile, word of encouragement, and teaching point, I instantly felt like part of the community that had seemed so intimidating. Even though I was, and still am, very much a beginner, I was never made to feel less than for being one. Fellow gym members encouraged me, and each member of the well-trained and knowledgable coaching staff patiently met me at my skills level, while encouraging me to safely and systematically keep progressing. The staff is committed to safety and teaching, and explained every move within the fundamental program so that I wouldn't get hurt. In addition, the group classes are fast paced, exciting, and taught in a way that is fun. Each member of the staff has a way of interjecting light hearted moments into each class that will put you at ease and cause you to smile in between shaking limbs and gasping breaths.
Every time I come back sore, or not-I'm convinced that this was one of the best decisions I ever made. If you want a workout that will test your limits, that will allow you to be part of a community that is supportive and also engages in philanthropic efforts with Veterans Village of San Diego, and if you want to be surrounded by really powerful women role models that demonstrate what it means to work hard, break barriers, and really support each other-then Power Keg Athletics is the way to go.
So come join and give it a shot. If you are new, keep a lookout for me, and we can figure it out together.
